We’ve all heard, (and probably even asked!) the common question “when am I ever going to use this?” in reference to a specific equation or challenging science topic.  Why invest in learning this stuff anyway?  Classroom teachers put a lot of time and effort into creating relatable hands-on lessons with real world applications to help answer these questions, but I believe focusing on a literal translation of the scientific world is only helpful in illustrating how the information has been applied in the past.  The answer to “when are you ever going to use it” is more about how you fundamentally learn if you want to apply it to your future.

My focus is to coach you to focus on how you personally approach learning difficult things and problem solving.  This is the stuff that you’re going to use, build on, and modify throughout the course of your life.  So, the answer to “when am I ever going to use this” is basically… well… always and forever.  When an awareness of diverse strategies and skills is co-learned with content, these things become more inherent and readily accessible.  This means they’re transferable which boosts overall academic performance, builds college readiness/success, and makes you a more adaptable thinker.

You’re right, you are probably never going to need to recite Le Chatlier’s Principle, Newton’s Laws, or the Central Dogma of Biology in your everyday life. Still, a lot happens behind the scenes that you don’t always realize when you’re learning things like this.  First, you’re probably picking up some fun vocabulary that you can impress people with at parties.  Okazaki Fragments! Quantum levels! The Permittivity of Free Space! … but, I want to do more than make you a New York Times Sunday crossword whiz.  Fun vocabulary aside, I help you analyze any type of data to determine what has happened and what might happen in the future, communicating your understanding using models and systems.

One of my main goals is to stop you from feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or on the verge of shutting down over your biology, chemistry, or physics classes.  The good new is, those feelings are signs your brain is growing.  During my 1-on-1 science tutoring sessions, we we lean into that growth by bringing awareness to how you approach and master intimidating topics. Everyone processes information differently, so how you get there depends on you.

I help students clarify their strengths and styles as they develop. Together, we fine-tune and catalog them so that they are ready to call on for future use. The more pathways and approaches you have for solving a problem, the more confident and equipped you are for anything. Although mastering science doesn’t always necessarily mean you become a scientist, it will teach you how to think…and good thinkers go far no matter which path they choose. So let’s get that science-y left brain pumping!

Two primary sources typically assess a student’s learning needs: parents and teachers.  Parents are tuned into the day-to-day details of their children’s particular challenges, but since they don’t have a basis for comparison, there can sometimes be blind spots. Teachers have experience with a broad spectrum of learners.  Their perspective on processing is in the context of a group dynamic, so sometimes things can slip through the cracks.  I have over 20 years’ experience working with students both 1-on-1 and in classrooms.  This means that while I see people as individuals, I also understand how their thought patterns can affect their classroom experience.  The more engaged kids are with teachers and peers, the more productive their school day is. I bridge gaps so that learning doesn’t just happen with me and things click more in classrooms and study groups.

The NYC private school system is one of the most academically rigorous and competitive in the world, and some of our public schools’ graduate students with college credit already under their belts.  New Yorkers are a different breed.  Our goals can be a little more ambitious, our courses can be a little more advanced, and our students are often aiming for top tier universities.  While there are thousands of great tutors out there, only a New York City tutor understands this unique academic landscape, and how to accommodate student’s social emotional well-being in this environment. I work with students across the country via Zoom.  Believe it or not, most high school students prefer this!  But for those that don’t, being based in NYC means I can come to your home in select areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn for in-person sessions.

THIS FITS MY BUDGET AND I'D LIKE TO TALK

NYC LEARNING PODS FOR CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS

I don’t work with students per se, but rather with families supporting the long term science and math needs of all siblings in the household.  Each families' circumstances are unique so your rate reflects that, and depends on a lot of factors.  How many kids, what grade level, in-person vs. online, and if in-person, which neighborhood? However, to give you a ballpark, my rate will never be less than $150 or more than $220 for 1-on-1 sessions, and I bill after the last session of each month.

For sessions:

Monday – Thursday 4:00p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (E.S.T.)

Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (E.S.T.)

Sunday 10:00 a.m.- 8 p.m. (E.S.T.)

I work with students in their homes in Manhattan below 86th street and in central Brooklyn, but I don't choose neighborhoods, they choose me.  This means I travel to you or Zoom based on bookings, and the early bird gets the worm.

For parents:

I provide detailed feedback at the end of every month with your invoice, but that doesn’t mean I’m not available for chats in the interim if need be.  Email me anytime!  Sometimes, Im able to call you back right away, but if I'm not, I will always get back to you by the end of the day to set up a time to speak.

Chemistry and Physics Group Tutoring in New York City, Manhattan and Brooklyn
Homeschool Pod Students learning Chemistry and Physics in NYC, Manhattan and Brooklyn.

To offer a more accessible tutoring option for students from diverse education systems (homeschoolers, unschoolers, public schoolers, etc.), I provide pod sessions for chemistry and physics students who (1) already have a group of four and (2) an available space.

Science pods have the advantage of a deeply discounted rate per person ($75/h) and longer session times (2 hours). I customize the format to cater to the needs of each group, but it usually includes more instruction and workshop-style problem-solving and is always more collaborative.

Double the tutoring time, half the price, and quadruple the fun!

Pod sessions must be paid in advance and are non-transferable and non-refundable.  If your group is homeschooled or unschooled, weekday sessions between noon and 3:00 p.m. can be arranged.
